Well, today was the beginning of DeWayne's Vanderbilt Transplant Center's Journey. DeWayne has been listed at UAB for the last 1-1/2 years. Which he had his first kidney transplant at UAB back in 1999. That kidney worked great lacking one month being twelve years. We never had any complaints at all about their program. We still don't. The reason we're pursuing a transplant at Vanderbilt now is their wait time is considerably less than UAB. UAB has a wait time of 6-8 years and Vanderbilt is 3-5 years. If they approve DeWayne and place him on the list, then we will be able to transfer his time from UAB to Vanderbilt which will put him higher on the list. The fact that he's had a previous transplant will also put him higher on the list because once you've had a transplant you're harder to match due to antibodies. It seems like a very overwhelming process, but they've made it much easier. So, hopefully we'll hear something soon.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-90848231530431250692013-01-14T22:32:00.000-08:002013-01-14T22:32:19.189-08:002013-01-14T22:32:19.189-08:00The Amazement of Awards Shows

DeWayne had a couple of friends (Brad and Andy) over Sunday night. They were playing this game they play all the time called World of Tanks. Which was a great thing last night....because that meant I could watch the Golden Globes without hearing him complain about having to watch an awards show. In general, I don't think men like awards shows. Which doesn't really make sense to me because of all the beautiful actresses. We as women like to say we watch the awards shows for all of the gorgeous dresses....well truthfully all I have to say is Bradley Cooper was looking really pretty last night.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-4129776499137945402013-01-13T11:31:00.000-08:002013-01-13T11:31:15.808-08:002013-01-13T11:31:15.808-08:00Do you Zumba?

How many of you have tried Zumba?? Ever since we got our Playstation fixed I have been wanting to try Zumba on it. We also love the Singstar brand. Well, we found Singstar Dance last week. So, I thought I would try that and if I liked that...then I would try to find Zumba for PS3. Well, I love the Singstar. But, I thought I would try to learn some basic steps first. So, I found some instructional videos on You Tube. Wow, it just furthered my view of how little rhythm I have. But, I WILL NOT be defeated. I want to try something that doesn't feel like a workout.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-54446929120279269362013-01-12T13:55:00.002-08:002013-01-12T13:55:50.169-08:002013-01-12T13:55:50.169-08:00Wishing for Love all through the Year

Well, the Holidays have come and gone. They crept up on me again this year. It seems the older I get, the quicker the year goes by. Before long, it will be time to celebrate Valentine's Day. I do so love the holidays but Valentine's isn't one of my favorites. I love the decorations but not the particular day. Don't get me wrong....anyone that knows me, knows that DeWayne is my life. But, I hate the fact that so many people take this one time and maybe their anniversary every year to let the love of their life know how they feel. D you know how I know that DeWayne loves me beyond measure? It's not because he tells me ten times a day. It's because of the little things. Just last night for instance....he was eating pistachios and he LOVES pistachios. I love them too, but it's difficult for me to open them. So, DeWayne surprised me with bringing me a handful of shelled pistachios. That's just one of the examples of his love for me. I just wish people in general would show their love for one another every day of the year like DeWayne and I do.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-76283426465781998682012-06-29T13:15:00.000-07:002012-06-29T13:15:00.734-07:002012-06-29T13:15:00.734-07:00I've been a little lost

It's been four months since I've written here on the blog. Life just seems to take over so quickly with my work schedule, trying to supplement our income with Ebay, DeWayne's doctor appointments and all of the other things that crop up on a daily basis.

My mom retired this last week and that's been some adjustment for all of us. We moved in with my mom in 2006 to help take care of my brother that was paralyzed due to a staph infection. He passed away in 2007 but we continued to live here with her. Every time we talked about moving out and getting an apartment, she never seemed to like the idea of that. She had been used to having someone live with her for the last few years and I think she was scared to be living by herself. When DeWayne went back on dialysis last June, we had decided this year we were going to move out and get a place of our own. When they deliver his dialysis supplies, it's between 40-60 boxes of fluid and other supplies. So, that has taken over the living room. But, since she decided to retire this month, it looks like the moving out will be placed on hold. At least until she can get a little bit more settled financially. It's a good thing we all get along.

DeWayne's health is doing fair. With the summer, it's so easy for him to get dehydrated. So, we have to watch his fluid balance closer. We're waiting to hear back from UAB about his bladder surgery. They had wanted to plan it for this summer. The urologist there told us he would have to have the bladder augmentation surgery before they would put him on the active kidney transplant list. So, it's just a waiting game.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-6803774535046323522012-02-28T13:08:00.001-08:002012-02-28T13:08:45.221-08:002012-02-28T13:08:45.221-08:00Fun UAB DayWell hello bright and wonderful Tuesday!! I am wearing down quick. We were up at 7:30 this morning. We were getting ready for our drive to Birmingham. Dewayne had to see the urologist to be cleared of any spinal cord injuries causing the advanced renal failure. So, now we're just waiting to see the doctor now. February 26th is celebrated as Levi Strauss Day. This is the day in 1847 that the Bavarian Government gave permission to the Strauss family to emigrate from Germany to America. One member of that family was Levi Strauss. He, along with his mother and two sisters set sail for New York. Once there, they joined his two brothers. He joined the dry goods business his two brothers had started. Once the Gold Rush news hit New York, Levi picked up and moved out west to open up a branch of the family business in 1853. About twenty years later, he partnered up with another immigrant by the name of Jacob Davis. He was a tailor from Reno, Nevada. They joined their forces and families to create the blue jean. Those of us who would rather wear a t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans...we owe our comfort to the Bavarian Government who gave us this talent 165 years ago.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-53316874604407382992012-02-25T20:09:00.000-08:002012-02-25T20:09:11.538-08:002012-02-25T20:09:11.538-08:00Blah!

Oh, this has so been me the last couple of days. But, I am trying to convince myself that I am better. I've had pink eye for the last couple of days. I work in direct patient care at a local hospital, so needless to say I couldn't work. So, I've been around here at the house...catching up on Hulu. I work evening shift, so that is the only way I can catch up with my prime time shows. I am very excited about tomorrow night. The Oscars are finally here!!!!!! As far back as I can remember, I have sat in front of that television screen every year to not see who wins. But, to see the dresses. That's my favorite part of the show...the Red Carpet. Tune in with me tomorrow night...then on Monday, I will reveal my favorites.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-73598583924480997742012-02-23T12:27:00.002-08:002012-02-23T12:27:23.207-08:002012-02-23T12:27:23.207-08:00National Chili Day

Today is National Chili Day. Traditional versions of this dish are usually made from chili peppers, onions, garlic, cumin, ground meat, beans and tomatoes. There is documentation of the earliest mention of chili as far back as 1519. In the 1880's, there were women known as "Chili Queens", they would operate out of downtown San Antonio They would set up, build fires and heat up their pre-made chili and sell it to the people walking by. It was said that the aroma would bring people in by the dozens. Later Mariachi bands would join in ...a Chili Fair of sorts. Around 1937, The San Antonio Health Department became more stringent with their health laws. The Chili Queens were shut down due to they couldn't adhere to the new health laws being implemented. Today, though the Bonham Exchange Building, which is located behind the Alamo houses the Official "Chili Queens Event". It is held the first Sunday of April.

Today is most commonly celebrated as Ash Wednesday, Lent and George Washington's Birthday but there
are more uncommon celebrations for this day also. There is National Margarita Day, Woolworths Day and World Thinking Day. Personally, I hate margaritas. I am probably one of the very few people out there that does. Margaritas seem to symbolize relaxation for so many people. When I try to think of what symbolizes relaxation to me...not having to work, reading or placing items to sell on Ebay. The Ebay thing is work..sort of but I am able to do it in my own home. I can list in pajamas if I want to. I hope to one day to be able to do that as a full time career. Anyway, I digress.

Not really sure what the Woolworths Day represents...guess I will have to research that one. Anyway, off to do the Real work thing...hope everyone has a great day.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-59265641461769856222012-02-19T09:34:00.002-08:002012-02-19T09:35:18.386-08:002012-02-19T09:35:18.386-08:00Broken Down

I placed these broken down boxes on the side of the road yesterday. These total around 40 boxes. This is the amount of dialysis supplies Baxter delivers each month for DeWayne to do his peritoneal dialysis each night. Each box holds 12 liters of fluid. Let me just say, those get pretty heavy when I have to transport them to the bedroom from the living room. Thankfully, I have a roll around cart now that helps out tremendously. DeWayne's not able to lift the boxes because he can't lift more than 5-10 pounds....or he's not supposed to. February 17th is celebrated as National PTA Founder's Day. It is a day to remember the considerable roll that PTA has played locally, regionally and nationally.

PTA's founders Alice McCellen Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Selena Sloan Butler were true visionaries. They had one true idea in common - the future of all children.
Today, the PTA has has become one of the largest volunteer organizations in the United States.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-32428409117517141652012-02-16T00:14:00.001-08:002012-02-16T00:14:53.727-08:002012-02-16T00:14:53.727-08:00Library Lovers Month

February is celebrated as Library Lovers Month. If there was any place that I could spend 24 hours a day at, it would be a library or a bookstore. My dad used to say that when I was growing up, I either had a book in my hand or I was petting an animal. They were my two loves as a child. As an adult, they still are. People ask what's your favorite book...I say I have not one, they all are my favorite.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-84399709996691929542012-02-14T22:51:00.001-08:002012-02-14T22:51:24.327-08:002012-02-14T22:51:24.327-08:00National GumDrop DayFebruary 15th is National GumDrop Day. I absolutely love old churches. The architecture is so supreme and breathtaking to the naked eye. That "old world" charm I believe is missing in our world these days.I wish for a simpler time in life.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-60046013773788567382011-12-27T23:39:00.000-08:002011-12-27T23:39:57.950-08:002011-12-27T23:39:57.950-08:00December 28, 2011

Oh, I am such a bad blogger. It has been five whole months since I've posted here. I am so so sorry! The past couple of days I have been working on my New Years Resolutions. Blogging is at the top of my list. I have got to get a better handle on my time management. Well, the only reason I am still on the computer at this time of the morning is that I am off work tomorrow. That makes things a little easier for tomorrow. Which I think I will get off of here and go work on my schedule for tomorrow. Hope to be back tomorrow well, I mean later today.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-81441387061696801512011-07-01T11:01:00.000-07:002011-07-01T11:01:38.600-07:002011-07-01T11:01:38.600-07:00July 1, 2011

The first day of July...wow how this year has flown. What an amazing journey so far this year. On a lighter note, I have found my newest and favorite TV series....Game of Thrones on HBO. We had gotten HBO to get ready to start watching True Blood since it was coming back on. But, we found a new favorite...if I had to choose between the two...it would always be Game of Thrones.
Life has thrown DeWayne and I a huge curve ball the last few months. DeWayne lost his job the third week of March. The following week we found out that his kidney function was down to 10% and he was going to have to have dialysis access. DeWayne had a kidney transplant eleven years and 8 months ago. It is failing now. Well, it's been failing for about nine years. The doctors at UAB hospital expected DeWayne to go back on dialysis before now. So, the following week he had a catheter placed into his peritoneum so he would be able to do dialysis at home. This was his preferred method of doing dialysis as opposed to going to the center three days a week. Most of those treatments are between 3-4 hours long. With the peritoneal dialysis, he could do that at night while he slept. Usually it takes those catheters a month to heal. For whatever reason, DeWayne's took two months to heal to be able to use. So, the last week of May we started training on doing the peritoneal dialysis at home. The process is you have the fluid drain in, let it dwell for a while, then you drain it out. When it drains out, it brings out all the toxins in your body that your kidneys can't filter out now that they're not working any longer. The first day, it worked fine. The next day....it didn't. So, on June 2nd DeWayne went back to surgery to see if they could manipulate the tube and see why it seemed to be obstructed. When the surgeon was done, he came out and talked to me. He said the transplanted kidney was laying on top of the tip of the catheter. So, he pulled back on the catheter and placed it on top of the transplant. He had to let those incisions heal for about a week before they could try to dialysis again. Well, once again the first day it worked fine...the second it didn't. So, on June 15th, he went back to surgery once again to find out what the problem was. They put nearly a liter of saline in and only 200 ml(approximately 6 ounces) came out. So,the surgeon replaced the tube. So, now we're off to waiting for another month(hopefully) to see if it will heal and work. They're not holding out too much hope at this point. It's looking like he might have to end up doing the dialysis at the center after all.
We have definitely learned in the last few months patience and taking each day at a time.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-39134321100899732282011-04-04T21:24:00.000-07:002011-04-04T21:31:37.005-07:002011-04-04T21:31:37.005-07:00April 4, 2011<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1JPHnsqF1Oc/TZqaPPxbcBI/AAAAAAAAAEw/i8svi5xq86A/s400/IPhone%2B018.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5591951474056458258" />

DeWayne and I are about to start a new journey. DeWayne had a kidney transplant 11-1/2 years ago. But this transplant is failing. His kidney function is down to 11%. They usually start back on dialysis at 10%. So,he had a catheter placed today to be able to restart dialysis at home. When he did dialysis several years ago, he did it while he was sleeping. His sister is currently being tested to see if she's a match for a kidney transplant. But, he's not going to be able to wait until the transplant for dialysis. So, we're are surely taking one day at a time.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-53126357976648782642011-03-27T22:56:00.000-07:002011-03-27T23:22:39.652-07:002011-03-27T23:22:39.652-07:00<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s72FFBm24xM/TZAlFjzR3XI/AAAAAAAAAEo/ZqwD83NEZZI/s400/March%2B2011%2B005.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5589007915006680434" />

This is a beautiful flower arrangement my mom put together. She picked these from her backyard. Before May 2010, she wasn't even able to walk outside. She had been crippled with osteoarthritis so bad. She broke down and had double knee replacement. Yes, you heard me correctly...double. I knew before the surgery, she was one more brave woman. But, after the surgery and the coming weeks....it became more evident to me. We had a couple of scary nights though. She lost so much blood she had to spend three days in ICU. But, it was all worth it in the end. Now, nine months later..she's able to work out in the yard as much as she wants.Julie Fulmerhttps://plus.google.com/118264640233537801635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4944351356839638146.post-31977741704084786912011-01-25T17:29:00.001-08:002011-01-25T17:36:28.600-08:002011-01-25T17:36:28.600-08:00January 25, 2011<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_-jXXQBqPnTc/TT956EuGrqI/AAAAAAAAAEU/KeyPQQL7oyg/s400/179360_492645841817_651196817_6193586_8129675_n.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566301703059713698" />

On Thursday, January 20th DeWayne,Zachary,Rhonda and I went to the Birmingham Museum of Art before we left to take Rhonda and Zachary back home to Selma.
